大学生時代にValveへの入社を希望して応募したというCrub氏が、同社からの返信メールをSNSで公開し150万インプレッション近い注目を集めています。

「大学に在学中、応募資格を満たさないValveの求人に応募しました。他のポジションで採用の可能性があるかもしれないと思ったからです。
以下は、その時にValveから届いた返信です。定型返信ではなく、担当者が実際に書いてくれたものです。あれから6年が経ち、現在はゲーム業界でキャリアを築いています。今でもこの返信のことを思い出しますし、こうした言葉をかけてもらえたことに心から感謝しています。」
Valveは「Steam」プラットフォームや、『Half-Life』『Counter-Strike』『Dota 2』など様々な人気ゲームを展開する企業です。
公開された返信メールから、Valveが卓越した専門性や豊富な実務経験を持ち、自立して大きな貢献ができる人材を求めていることがわかる、非常に興味深い内容となっていました。
Crub氏はこの真摯な返信メールを読み、「ゲーム業界に入るという目標を達成するまでは絶対に妥協しない」と心に誓い、実際にゲーム業界入りすることを実現したそうです。
また、メールを書いたご本人にも改めて連絡し、その際にも丁寧な返事をもらったことを明かしていました。

現時点では、今回の応募について選考を進めないこととなりました。
Valveでは、エントリーレベルのポジションを設けておらず、特別なケースを除いて、新卒者を採用することも基本的にありません。
Valveで働くための道のりは、さまざまです。
Valveに採用されるために「こうすればよい」という具体的なアドバイスを提供しているわけではありませんが、私たちは通常、アート、ソフトウェア開発、電気工学など、それぞれの専門分野でトップレベルにあり、Valveのゲームやサービスに対して、自らの力で大きな貢献ができるスキルを持つ人材を求めています。
そのため、ValveがWebサイトに掲載しているすべての求人では、相当な実務経験が求められています。
Valveで働く人の多くは、こうした分野で7～10年の実務経験を持っており、それ以上の業界経験を持つ人も少なくありません。
そのレベルの経験に到達する方法はさまざまです。その分野の学位を持っている人もいれば、まったく別の分野の学位を持っている人もいます。また、学位そのものを持っていない人もいます。
共通しているのは、全員がそれぞれの分野における世界トップクラスの専門家であり、優れたコミュニケーション能力を持ち、顧客が何を求めているのか、そしてそれをどうすれば最善の形で提供できるのかを考えることに長けているという点です。
こうした能力は形として捉えにくく、学校で教わるようなものでもありません。そして、それこそが一般的な候補者と、特別な候補者を分ける要素です。
つまり、私たちからのアドバイスは、自分が情熱を持てることを追求し、その分野のスキルを磨き上げるために時間を費やしてください、ということです。
