イギリスのCounter-StrikeプレイヤーWilliam “mezii” Merriman選手が、イギリス公共放送「BBC」に出演しメジャー優勝について語っています。
mezii – イギリス初のメジャー王者
mezii選手が所属する「Team Vitality」は、Counter-Strikeメジャー大会『BLAST.tv Austin Major 2025』で優勝しました。
メジャー大会は、Counter-Strikeの公式世界大会の位置づけで年に2回ペースで開催されており、メジャー大会で優勝することはCounter-Strikeプレイヤー最大の名誉です。
mezii選手は、Counter-Strikeメジャー大会の歴史において、イギリス人として初めてタイトルを獲得したプレイヤーになりました。
以下は、放送内のインタビューで自分が気になったやり取りの紹介です。
―― あなたはイギリス人で初めてのメジャー大会優勝者となりました。決勝前にそのことは意識していましたか？
SNSでたくさん応援していただいたのですが、イギリスのプレイヤーやファンのみなさんから多くのメッセージが届きました。
イギリスのみなさんが誇りに思えるような結果を出したいと考えていました。
間違いなく大会を通じた自分の目標の1つでした。
イギリスの選手として、メジャー優勝のタイトルを持ち帰りたいと強く思っていました。
優勝を実現することができて、本当にうれしいです。
―― 初めてメジャー大会を観戦したのはいつですか?
2014年の初め頃だったと思います。
父がCounter-Strike: Sourceをプレーしていたんです。
Counter-Strikeを真剣に競技として捉えるようになったのが2014年で、その頃に初めてメジャー大会を観戦しました。
選手たちがプレッシャーの中で激しく真剣に競い合うメジャー大会を見るのは本当にエキサイティングでした。
伝統スポーツで言えば、サッカーのワールドカップ、テニスのグランドスラムのようなものです。
他の大会は見ていなくても、これだけは絶対に見たい、メジャー大会はそのような存在です。
―― 2014年当時は何歳でしたか？いまでは競技者としてメジャー大会のステージに立つようになりました。どのような気持ちでしょうか？
16歳の高校生でした。メジャーを含む大会に出場できるようになったことは本当に光栄です。
メジャーを観戦していたころ、いつか自分もプロとしてプレーしたいと夢見ていました。
そしていま、実際にメジャーでプレーして、しかも優勝することができて、本当に夢が叶いました。まさか実現できるとは思っていませんでしたし、いまでも実感がわきません。
―― 優勝賞金は50万ドルと大金です。大会中に賞金が頭をよぎることはありますか？それとも、優勝トロフィー獲得のために勝利を追い求めるのみでしょうか？
私たち選手にとっては勝利こそが重要で、賞金のことはあまり意識していません。
もちろん、賞金はすばらしくありがたいものです。
そもそも、自分たちはプロになる前からゲームや競うことが楽しくてプレーしています。
チームの仲間や世界中のプレイヤーたちも同様でしょう。
職業としてフルタイムでプレーすることができるのは本当に名誉なことだとも思っています。
ステージに立ちファンのみなさんの前で好きなゲームをプレーすることができるのは最高です。
賞金は魅力的なものですが、自分たちにとっては好きなゲームをプレーして競い合うことが賞金よりも重要なことです。
